11 Mr. Harden was married in this township to Miss Kate McCleary, a native of Pennsylvania and a daughter of William and Salinda (Morehead) McCleary, who were pioneers of Lee County. Her parents were born in Pennsylvania but were of Scotch lineage. They came hither when she was young, and at first lived on a farm in Nachiusa Township. Later the father purchased a farm in Nelson Township, to which he removed his family and here he died in 1884 at the age of three-score years and ten. Religiously, he was a Presbyterian and, politically, he was a Democrat. Mrs. Harden was fourteen years old when the family came to this State, and she remained one of the parental household until her marriage. She died here in the home in whose upbuilding she had assisted her husband, December 3, 1889, at the age of thirty~ eight, and was mourned far beyond the home circle, as she was a woman of rare merit, of a sweet and wholesome nature, and all who came under her influence found her to be kind and true. By her death the Lutheran Church lost one of its most esteemed members. She was a devoted wife and fond mother, and her happy marriage with our subject that was saddened only by her death, was blessed to them by three children: Eva J., at home with her father; William J., and Lawrence D., who is being reared by an aunt.

13 A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT
A singular and terrible casualty, which is remembered by the other people throughout the county, occurred in this township is 1827. Upon the 18th of April in that year. Abraham Markle NEYMAN, who was then keeping a hotel in Butler Borough, where the Vogeley House now stands, and his brother-in-law, Parker MCCLEARY, set out in a wagon to bring home Mrs. NEYMAN and her two children, who had been visiting at the house of John NEYMAN, the children's grandfather, where is now the MCGRATH Mill.

Soon after the little party started homeward, and while they were upon the hill, south of the mill, a violent storm arose, and a huge tree by the roadside was hurled crashing upon the wagon and its occupants. Abraham NEYMAN was instantly killed; a child, about three years and a half of age, received injuries from which death speedily ensued; Mrs. NEYMAN was stunned so severely that she did not recover consciousness until after husband and child has been buried, and through her long life (she died at the age of eighty-three years) suffered from her injuries, being incurably crippled.

Her youngest child, at her breast when the tree fell, which killed father and brother, escaped uninjured, and now, after the lapse of over fifty-five years, is known to many of our readers as Dr. A. M. NEYMAN, of Butler. The accident caused widespread sorrow, for in that early time, although people dwelt farther apart than now, they were fully as closely knit together by the ties of sympathy.

20 Barak Fisher, and his wife, Mary (Butler) Fisher, were both natives of Bucks county, Pennsylvania, and sleep in the old Back Creek meeting house burial ground, at Gainsboro, Frederick county, Virginia, about nine miles from Winchester. They were married in Buckingham Meeting House, Bucks county, Pennsylvania, on February 18th, 1761.

This meeting house has the usual partition or division for the purpose of separating at certain meetings the Orthodox and the Hicksites. In this partition there is a bullet hole made by a ball from a revolutionary' gun shot over fifteen years after this marriage took place.

At a meeting on June 6, 1763, at Hopewell meeting house, Frederick county, Virginia, there was a certificate produced from Buckingham monthly meeting, Bucks county, Pennsylvania, for Barak Fisher and Mary (Butler) Fisher, his wife, which was read and accepted. Hence they removed from Bucks county, Pennsylvania, to Frederick county, Virginia, in the year 1763. They settled on Back Creek, near the village of Gainsboro, about nine miles northwest of Winchester, Virginia.

The ruins of the old house in which they lived when they first removed from Pennsylvania to Virginia can yet be seen. The old farm upon which they originally settled is still in possession of some of their descendants. Mary (Butler) Fisher, died in the year 1800. Her grave is still clearly and distinctly marked. Her grandfather, Barak Fisher, died in the year 1784. His grave is not so clearly defined.

South of the Ham farm was the large farm of John and Jane McGaffey, partly in Epsom and partly in Deerfield. Of this family, in addition to what has been said, it may be stated that Samuel McGaffey of Sandwich married Lydia Sanborn of Epsom in 1784; John McGaffey of Lyndon, Vt., married Margaret Sanborn of Epsom in 1800, and Neal and William W.
